A dramatic legal showdown is unfolding in Washington. President Donald Trump has unveiled a $13.8 billion “anti-weaponization fund” to compensate allies he claims were politically targeted under past administrations. Meanwhile, former President Joe Biden has filed suit against the Department of Justice to block the release of 70 hours of private interview recordings, arguing that disclosure would be an invasion of privacy.

The recordings, originally made for Biden’s 2017 memoir Promise Me, Dad, became entangled in a 2023 DOJ investigation into mishandled classified documents. Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report described Biden as “kind-hearted but memory-poor,” sparking controversy but recommending no charges. Now, with Trump back in office, the DOJ has reversed its stance and plans to release the tapes to the Heritage Foundation and the House Judiciary Committee on June 15. Biden’s team insists this is “blatant political manipulation.”

Trump’s settlement with the DOJ over a $10 billion tax leak case has raised even more eyebrows. The deal not only created the billion-dollar fund but also granted the Trump family immunity from tax audits until 2026. Critics call it a case of “suing oneself and compensating oneself,” accusing Trump of enriching allies under the guise of legal procedure.

Vice President JD Vance has hinted that even January 6 rioters could benefit from the fund, while Democrats denounce the arrangement as corrupt and dangerous. Legal experts warn that both Trump’s financial maneuvers and Biden’s privacy battle show how America’s judiciary is being bent into a tool of political survival.

As analysts put it, when “procedural legality” becomes a mask for power, the law risks losing its role as a guardian of justice — becoming instead a weapon in partisan warfare
