17-year-old Class 12 student in Amritsar allegedly died after consuming a poisonous substance, with her family accusing school authorities of subjecting her to continuous mental harassment over pending fees of around Rs 20,000. The incident has sparked outrage in Punjab, prompting Education Minister Harjot Bains to order a probe and announce strict action against those found responsible.
The deceased was staying with her maternal aunt while pursuing her studies. According to family members, she took the extreme step after allegedly facing repeated pressure from school authorities over unpaid fees.
Student Recorded Video Before Death
Before her death, the girl recorded a video from her hospital bed in which she made serious allegations against the school management. She claimed that she had been subjected to severe mental harassment over the issue of school fees and was deeply distressed by the treatment she received.
In the video, she alleged that she had been called to the school on May 11 and was subjected to mental harassment. She also claimed that she was removed from her class WhatsApp group.
The student stated that the school management was responsible for her condition and appealed for justice while battling for her life.
Family Alleges Constant Pressure Over Fees
According to her family, the class 12th student had outstanding school fees of approximately Rs 20,000. Her maternal aunt, Sarabjit Kaur, alleged that the school’s principal, Shabnam Sharma, and class teacher, Akanksha Sharma, repeatedly pressured the student to clear the dues.
The family claims the continued pressure left the teenager emotionally distressed and ultimately drove her to consume the poisonous substance.
The school administration has not yet issued any statement regarding the allegations.
Punjab Government Orders Probe
Reacting to the incident, Punjab Education Minister Harjot Bains said a case of abetment to suicide has been registered, and an investigation has been launched.
He said strict action would be taken against the school administration and any individual found guilty during the probe.
Following the incident, the girl was admitted to a hospital, where she succumbed during treatment. Police personnel from the Vijay Nagar outpost have recorded statements from family members and begun an investigation.
Officials said further action will be taken based on the post-mortem report and findings of the ongoing probe.
