President Donald Trump said Iran shot down a US Apache helicopter during a patrol mission over the Strait of Hormuz, raising the prospect of further escalation in already heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran.
In a post on Truth Social released Tuesday, Trump said he had been informed by military officials that Iranian forces brought down one of the United States’ Apache attack helicopters while it was operating over the strategically vital waterway.“I have just been informed by our Great Military that last night the Iranians shot down one of our highly sophisticated Apache Helicopters while patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump said
The president added that both pilots aboard the aircraft survived the incident and were safely recovered without injuries. “There were two pilots involved, both are safe and uninjured,” he said.
Despite the successful rescue of the crew, Trump signaled that the United States would take action in response to the incident.
“Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack,” the president stated.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, handling a significant portion of global oil and natural gas shipments. The waterway has become a focal point of tensions in recent months as the conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel has intensified.
Trump’s remarks come amid an increasingly volatile security situation across the Gulf region, where military patrols, naval operations, and aerial surveillance missions have expanded following clashes involving Iranian-backed groups and Western forces.
Neither the US Department of Defense nor Iranian officials immediately provided additional details regarding the reported shootdown. It remains unclear what type of weapon was allegedly used or exactly where the helicopter was operating when it was hit.
If confirmed, the incident would mark one of the most direct confrontations between US and Iranian forces since the latest regional crisis began.
The reported shootdown is likely to heighten concerns about the possibility of broader military escalation in the Middle East, particularly as both Washington and Tehran continue to exchange warnings while pursuing competing security objectives in the region.
