Mumbaikars have been lining up at LPG distribution centers following rumors of a cooking gas shortage. However, State Rationing Controller Chandrakant Dange has clarified that the stock is sufficient. The real story is the city’s aggressive push toward Piped Natural Gas (PNG).
By June 30, 2026, LPG supply will be discontinued in urban areas where PNG infrastructure is available. This transition is a massive logistical undertaking by the BMC and state officials to modernize the city’s energy grid. While migrant laborers will still have access to 5kg refills, the average urban household must now apply for PNG or face a cutoff. It is a move toward safety and efficiency, though the “25-day booking restriction” during the transition period remains a point of friction for many residents.
