Israel and Hezbollah have agreed to implement a ceasefire following negotiations in Washington, according to a joint statement released by the United States on Wednesday. The agreement requires a complete halt to hostilities by the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia and the withdrawal of all its operatives from the South Litani Sector.
The ceasefire follows months of conflict that escalated after Israel launched a military operation in Lebanon in March targeting Hezbollah, which had been carrying out cross-border attacks in support of Iran. A previous ceasefire agreement reached last month failed to stop the fighting, but both sides have now committed to renewed efforts to maintain the truce.
