United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will travel to India the week after the G7 leaders’ summit for further discussions on a possible bilateral trade deal, a senior U.S. administration official said on Saturday. While Washington believes an agreement is entirely possible, officials emphasized that a final breakthrough is not expected immediately.
The G7 Stage in Evian-les-Bains
Trade negotiations are set to be a key focus during U.S. President Donald Trump’s upcoming bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The meeting will take place on the sidelines of the Group of Seven (G7) summit, scheduled to be held from June 15 to 17 in the French resort town of Evian-les-Bains.
The summit will bring together leaders from the world’s major economies, with India participating as a high-level guest delegation. However, despite the high-profile setting, U.S. officials cooled expectations of a sudden announcement, clarifying that the complex trade package will not be closed during the three-day gathering in France.
Modiโs Ambition vs. Trumpโs “Very Good Deal” Mandate
The relationship between Washington and New Delhi has grown increasingly vital amid shifting global supply chains, a reality both leaders are keen to leverage.
- India’s Stance: “We know that Prime Minister Modi is quite ambitious about the role he sees for India, and the importance of the U.S.-India relationship,” a senior U.S. official told reporters on Saturday. “We think a potential trade deal is part of that.”
- The U.S. Position: President Trump will continue to insist on securing “a very good deal” for American industries before signing off. The administration remains highly optimistic, with the official adding, “We think a very good deal is possible. I don’t think we’ll close that deal at the G7.”
Greerโs Upcoming India Visit
To maintain the diplomatic momentum generated at Evian-les-Bains, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is scheduled to fly directly to India the following week. This follow-up visit will transition the talks from broad political agreements between Trump and Modi into technical-level negotiations.
The upcoming rounds are expected to tackle long-standing trade frictions, including market access for American agricultural goods, digital trade policies, and tariffs on steel and aluminum. While the road ahead requires navigating deep regulatory complexities, both nations appear committed to utilizing the post-G7 window to edge closer to a historic economic framework.
